How to Make a Conservative Beehive

I may be doing this on a wig, but the same rules apply for real hair.
And while I mention that I'm styling my wig for Rose Tyler, other characters with this look includes Joan Holloway from Mad Men, and the animated princess Cinderella.
Back combing works well for any styling needing some height or volume and does an excellent job of building a base for spikey anime styles.
This tutorial also includes a very brief explanation of how to add 'roots' to a wig. I made this tutorial a video because the 'action' makes a little more sense than a still photo.
