Arda’s Best Face Forward – Round 1: Monochromatic Challenge

Posted on 08 November 2016

Hello contestants and spectators, and welcome to round 1 of Arda’s Best Face Forward 2016! Our contestants received a package containing 5 makeup items of 1 color.

The packages included a mix of 5 from the following:
Kryolan Single Eyeshadow
-Morphe Single Eyeshadow
LA Splash Liquid Lipstick
-Sugarpill Loose Pigment
-Sugarpill Pressed Eyeshadow
-Mehron Paradise Paint
-Kryolan Polyester Glitter
-Kryolan HD Cream Liner

Note: Not all packages contained the exact same products, but rather all products that were of one color. Packages were sent completely at random.

Contestants: This is a skills challenge! Designed to test your makeup prowess, we want to see a complete makeup look using only one color. The packages that were sent to you is the color that will be assigned for you to use. You may use supplemental shade variances of the color sent, i.e. if you received blue eyeshadow, you can use a variance of light blue or dark blue to add depth and contrast, however, all 5 products in your package must be prominently featured or the dominant products used in your makeup look. If blue was your color, and you received a blue eyeshadow, then that shadow must be the main color on the eyes and the additional shadows you use can complement that color. As stated, you are allowed to use your own supplemental shade variances of your assigned color in addition to the 5 products sent. And even though black and white is the sum of all colors and the absence of color, you are allowed to use any makeup product that is either black or white to add subtle nuances to your look. You are also allowed foundation, concealer, and/or powder as your base if you desire. Other mediums will be accepted as well such as mixing medium, clear gloss, fixing sprays, glue, etc.

We will require 1 photo of the products (all 5 together is fine) as well as in-progress photos and/or video demonstrating where the 5 products were used in addition to your final photo submission. A mood board and/or reference material is welcomed, but not required and will not affect your score. For the final photo, do take several angles of your finished look. Please do not add filters to your photo. We are looking for clean, clear shots of your makeup and anything affecting that will affect your final score.

This challenge is not a full body makeup challenge. From shoulders-up is fine, but please submit photos that are tight shots of the makeup. You may have assistance with the photography, hair, wardrobe, and modeling but not with the makeup application.

These are the categories we will be judging you  for a total of 40 points possible:

-Use of Product/Efficiency of Materials (10 points)

-Presentation (10 points)
-Creativity (10 points)
-Cleanliness (10 points)
Here is a rundown on how each category works:

Use of Product/Efficiency of Materials (1/4 of your final score)

In this category, we will be judging you based on how well you utilized the 5 products given to you. Are the 5 products the key feature of the look? Or did the supplemental colors take over instead? How well did you meet the challenge: monochromatic?

Presentation (1/4 of your final score)

This is where the quality of your pictures comes into play. These are the some of the things we will be looking for when judging: How well can we see the makeup? How is the color displayed? Is it artistic yet flattering? We highly encourage some type of styling i.e. hair for a more completed look.

Creativity (1/4 of your final score)

For this category, we will be looking at the overall look achieved, and how the products were used. This category will differ from the Efficiency of Materials category in that we are looking more at the artistic aspect of your look. Also, specifically for the products, where and how did you use them? Did you only use eyeshadow on your eyes? Or did you use them as blush as well? Was the lipstick used as eyeliner instead? Etc. Other than that, you have free range on what kind of look you would like to create so long as it is monochromatic.

Cleanliness (1/4 of your final score)

This category will be judged based on technique. Are the products blended where they need to be? Are there smooth transitions between product? Is there any fallout visible? Are any lines jagged and uneven that is not intentional? Etc.

Scores will be done by 3 Arda judges. Scores will be added up and divided by 3 to give each contestant an average score for each category. Contestants can obtain a private critique if requested.

The contestant with the lowest score will be eliminated from Best Face Forward, but they will go home with a $50 gift certificate!

The contestant with the highest score from our Arda judges will receive immunity for the next round.

There will be an audience favorite poll once the results are in; the top favorite will receive a $20 gift certificate to our website.

Entries should be submitted to: makeup@arda-wigs.com with the title: ArdaBFF 2016 Round 1 Entry

Late entry policy: Entries submitted within 12 hours after the deadline can be accepted as a late entry. Late entries will not be qualified to enter the audience poll, and will receive a 15% point deduction from their total score. This will likely result in being eliminated from the competition, but the contestant can still receive their $50 certificate. Entries submitted past the 12-hour late entry period will be disqualified, and will not qualify for their $50 certificate.

Your deadline will be: November 15th at Noon (Central US time)

Have fun, and best of luck! We can’t wait to see what you come up with! :D
