This week we interviewed our customer, Kadiaa Cosplay! See more of their work via Facebook!

Q: When did you start cosplaying, and what got you started?
A: I grew up reading manga and found out about cosplay through a Shojo Beat magazine when I was in the sixth grade. The idea of dressing up as a character outside of Halloween was a radical, new concept for me, but at the time I lacked the confidence to actually cosplay and didn’t know how to access the community. Many years later in college (2013), I decided to finally give it a try and make my dreams come true. After looking at online tutorials and videos I was able to craft my first cosplay, San from Princess Mononoke, and then attend my first convention. It felt incredible to be dressed up in a crazy outfit while being surrounded by hundreds of other cosplayers. I was immediately hooked and since then I’ve been attending conventions and pumping out cosplays year-round.

Q: What is your favorite part of the costume-making process?
A: My favorite part is seeing a 2D design and figuring out how that would transfer over into the real world. This part of the cosplay process requires a lot of problem solving, creative thinking, and planning, and it’s fun for me to draw up ideas for how to execute a difficult part of a cosplay.

Q: Which costume are you most proud of?
A: I would have to say that I am most proud of my Transistor cosplay. Transistor is a game that I am very passionate about and the process of bringing Red to life felt very fulfilling. Aside from that, building the Transistor was a learning process every step of the way. I worked with a variety of new materials such as LEDs, plexiglass, acrylic, and worbla and learned many techniques for using them. Seeing the Transistor light up for the first time was very exciting and a huge relief and it felt like my work had finally paid off.

I entered a cosplay competition (Anime Matsuri 2015) for the first time while wearing this cosplay, along with my partner who cosplayed as the Kid from Bastion. We had the honor of receiving a judge’s choice award from Volpin and also the first place award for craftsmanship in our division. The whole experience is one that I’ll never forget and I’m happy to have represented a game that I am deeply passionate about.

Q: Do you have a favorite Arda Wig style and/or color?
A: I love the short styles, especially the Hansel and Magnum. They’re low maintenance and I like how messy the Hansel can look with a little teasing. I also adore the Suzi lace front because the widow’s peak and layering are exquisite. As far as colors go, all of Arda’s colors are wonderful and it’s hard to name just one! I would have to say that my favorite colors to wear are the bright, vivid ones, especially Crimson, Plum, and Midnight Blue.

Q: What advice do you have for new cosplayers getting into the hobby?
A: Just do it! Cosplay is an expression of your interests and a way to let your creativity flow. Don’t be afraid of what other people will think. If you have an interest in the hobby, formulate a plan for creating something wonderful. Also, no one starts off perfect. It takes practice and a lot of trial and error to get better. Don’t be afraid of failing, because messing up means you discovered a way not to do it… then you can approach it differently for next time and figure out a way that does work!
